Description

The module aims to develop the learner’s knowledge of communications in a health communications context and to develop key literacy skills.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

discuss the introductory concepts relating to communications and health communications theory.

2.

discuss how interpersonal interactions in health contexts influence people’s health and health care experiences.

3.

present health science information in an effective and professional manner.

4.

prepare written academic compositions on health topics.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full time.

Lectures and supplementary reading will provide the foundation theory.  Theory assessment examples are:- reflections in a learning journal, short answer tests, MCQs.

Self Directed Learning: Set around specific topics, students will combine what is learned in lectures and workshops with the additional activities they are set outside of class time.  

Formative Feedback

Workshops in a computer laboratory setting allows students to learn in a group setting and benefit from timely feedback from the lecturer to check their own progress towards achieving the learning outcomes of the module and to motivate learning.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.

 

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS

1. Personal Learning Journal (40%: Individual Mark)

Health Communications & Presentations:

Variety of assessment to be set and appropriate examples include: short class tests/ Online Moodle quizzes/ practical activities with reflections/ directed readings and reflections/ contribution to discussions (online or class).

Literacy Skills:  Short complementary assessments examples include: short class tests/ mcqs/ complete assigned practical activities and reflect/complete assigned readings & reflect/ contribution to discussions (online or class).

 

 2. Presentation Skills (30%: Individual Mark = 15%;  Group Mark = 15%)

There are two components to this assessment:

  1. The learners will be assessed on ability to communicate visual information in a clear and concise manner (Group Mark)
  2. The learner will be assessed on ability to deliver messages on a health related topic in a presentation format (Individual Mark)

 

3. Written Assignment (30%: Individual Mark)

Range of Individual short written assessment (30%).  Examples: Short essays; Short written report and/or short written response to questions.

Repeat Assessments if attendance requirement achieved and student does not achieve pass grade.

Repeat Attend if attendance requirement not achieved.
