Description

This course provides a theoretical and a practical introduction to inorganic chemistry. Fundamental aspects of inorganic chemistry relevant to pharmaceutical science are presented in the theory component of the module. The module develops the ability to carry out inorganic chemistry analytical techniques with confidence and with a high level of accuracy and precision.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe the basic concepts of inorganic chemistry including atomic number, atomic mass, atomic orbitals and electronegativity values

2.

Describe the concepts of molecular bonding including models such as MO theory and VSEPR

3.

Describe chemistry concepts related to acids, bases and ions in solution.

4.

Demonstrate understanding of special topics such as catalysis, coordination chemistry and/or electron transfer.

5.

Demonstrate ability to work safely in a chemical laboratory.

6.

Perform inorganic chemistry analytical techniques.

7.

Record data of analytical work and write concise experimental reports.

8.

Analyse experimental data and draw conclusions on validity of data.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. This will include lectures and laboratory practicals augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 15% continuous assessment, 50% practical and 35% final examination.

Continuous assessment will comprise regular summative tests to encourage engagement with the module, monitor progress and provide feedback.

Laboratory skills and report-writing ability will be assessed as part of the practical work performed during the module.

The student must reach an assigned gate in the final examination and must achieve 40% overall to pass the subject.

Self-assessment tests and other forms of formative assessment are provided to students to check their own progress towards achieving the learning outcomes of the module and to motivate learning.

Describe the basic concepts of inorganic chemistry including atomic number, atomic mass, atomic orbitals and electronegativity values.

  • Overview of atomic number, atomic mass, atomic orbitals and electronegativity values.

Describe the concepts of molecular bonding including models such as MO theory and VSEPR. 

  • Overview of molecular bonding, octet rule, MO theory and VSEPR.  

Describe chemistry concepts related to acids, bases and ions in solution.              

  • Overview of acids, bases and ions in solution.

Demonstrate understanding of special topics such as catalysis, coordination chemistry and/or electron transfer.              

  • Overview of bioinorganic chemistry, principles of coordination chemistry, electron-transfer proteins, catalysis and catalyic reactions. 

Demonstrate ability to work safely in a chemical laboratory.       

Perform inorganic chemistry analytical techniques.

Record data of analytical work and write concise experimental reports.

Analyse experimental data and draw conclusions on validity of data.

  • ​​​​​​​Laboratory practicals covering analytical techniques such as gravimetric analysis, volumetric analysis, titrametric analysis and UV analysis.
