Description

The course is a single semester introductory theoretical course on analytical methodologies. The course introduces the student to the basic elements of chemical analysis from sampling to the collection and statistical evaluation of analytical data.  The course covers aspects of volumetric analysis including the application of primary and secondary standards and various titrimetric analytical techniques. The course also provides both a theoretical introduction to several instrumental analysis techniques including infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet -visible spectroscopy, atomic spectrometry, electrochemistry and chromatographic methods of analysis.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe fundamental strategies for the performance of volumetric and instrumental chemical analyses.

2.

Explain the fundamental principles of a range of instrumental and classical methods of analysis.

3.
Express chemical compositions in a range of concentration units.
4.

Calculate chemical compositions from raw instrumental and non-instrumental analytical data.

5.
Evaluate the reliability of analytical data using simple statistical and quality control techniques.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be taught through a range of methodologies including lecture, tutorial and workshop. The students will learn through engagement with the class materials / resources listed above and through the use of multimedia tools including moodle, internet sites and podcasts.

Module Assessment Strategies

The students will be assess in a number of forms including short questions, practical exercises, data handling and final examination.

These assessment will evaluate the students knowledge and understanding of the subject material. They will also allow the assessor to evaluate the ability of the student to resolve problems and to draw conclusions from experimental data.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat continuous assessment and /or final examination.

The gold standard in analytical chemistry, Dan Harris Quantitative Chemical Analysis provides a sound physical understanding of the principles of analytical chemistry and their applications in the disciplines. Dan Harris presents the subject in a rigorous, readable and interesting manner, lucid enough for non-chemistry majors but containing the depth required by advanced undergraduates. For the first time since the book was published in 1978, Harris has worked with a new contributing author, Professor Chuck Lucy of the University of Alberta. Lucy shares his expertise and teaching experience in Chapters 23-26 on chromatography and capillary electrophoresis.

Known for its readability and systematic, rigorous approach, this fully updated Ninth Edition of FUNDAMENTALS OF ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY offers extensive coverage of the principles and practices of analytic chemistry and consistently shows students its applied nature. The books award-winning authors begin each chapter with a story and photo of how analytic chemistry is applied in industry, medicine, and all the sciences. To further reinforce student learning, a wealth of dynamic photographs by renowned chemistry photographer Charlie Winters appear as chapter-openers and throughout the text. Incorporating Excel spreadsheets as a problem-solving tool, the Ninth Edition is enhanced by a chapter on Using Spreadsheets in Analytical Chemistry, updated spreadsheet summaries and problems, an Excel Shortcut Keystrokes for the PC insert card, and a supplement by the text authors, EXCEL APPLICATIONS FOR ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY, which integrates this important aspect of the study of analytical chemistry into the books already rich pedagogy. New to this edition is OWL, an online homework and assessment tool that includes the Cengage YouBook, a fully customizable and interactive eBook, which enhances conceptual understanding through hands-on integrated multimedia interactivity.
