Description

This module introduces students of the health sciences to essential principles and concepts in chemistry.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe the basic composition of matter and atomic structure and explain the various types of bonding that occur within matter.

2.

Relate the physical and chemical properties of biologically important molecules to their chemical structures

3.

Discuss chemical reactions in aqueous solutions, including the concept of acids and bases.

4.

Solve problems which involve application of core chemical concepts, including calculations pertaining to moles, molarity, pH and solution preparation

5.

Conduct practical work competently in a safe and responsible manner both individually and in teams.

6.

Communicate and present scientific information in a variety of forms.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. It will include lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment..

Module Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed using the Moodle learning platform and a range of multiple choice questions. Further assessment methods include laboratory performance and end of year examination.

Students must reach an assigned gate (mark) in the final exam and achieve 40% overall to pass the module.

.

Repeat Assessments

Students may repeat Continuous Assessment and / or Final Theory Exam as required.

The eleventh edition was carefully reviewed with an eye toward strengthening the content available in OWLv2, end-of-chapter questions, and updating the presentation. Nomenclature changes and the adoption of IUPAC periodic table conventions are highlights of the narrative revisions, along with changes to the discussion of d orbitals. In-text examples have been reformatted to facilitate learning, and the accompanying Interactive Examples in OWLv2 have been redesigned to better parallel the problem-solving approach in the narrative. New Capstone Problems have been added to a number of chapters.
