Description

This module introduces students to the fundamental laws and principles of elementary chemistry needed for an understanding of chemical hazards.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Outline the basic concepts of introductory principles of chemistry and the main features of the Periodic Table.

2.
Summarize the basic composition of matter, atoms and atomic theory, and the various types of bonding.
3.
Solve problems related to the core chemical concepts such as moles, molarity, pH and solution preparation and discuss chemical reactions in aqueous solutions, concept of acids and bases.
4.

Show the use of Safety Data Sheets and evaluate the hazards associated with chemicals.

5.
Interpret other basic skills of laboratory and scientific report writing and communicate experimental data.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

.

Module Assessment Strategies

The module will be assessed on the basis of continuous assessment (theory and practical) and final theory examination.

Self-assessment tests and quizzes and other forms of formative assessment are provided to students to check their own progress towards achieving the learning outcomes of the module and to motivate learning. Laboratory skills and report-writing ability are assessed as part of the practical work performed during the module.

Regular summative tests are used to encourage engagement with the module, monitor progress and provide feedback.

Repeat Assessments

.

Indicative Syllabus

Introduction to composition of matter, atoms, elements, compounds and the Periodic Table.

Explain and apply the calculation related to moles, molarity and solution preparation, acids, bases, pH.

Illustrate chemical bonding and chemical reactions (balancing equations, oxidation and reduction reactions)

Laboratory safety.

Conduct practical work with accuracy and precision using a range of measuring apparatus including volumetric glassware, analytical balance and specific meters.

Communicate and present scientific data and information in a variety of forms.
