Description

This professional practice placement offers students the opportunity to gain further experience in a variety of social care practice settings and agencies within which the knowledge and skills developed over their study to date are relevant. It will provide an opportunity for the student to apply theoretical concepts, knowledge, and skills to practice situations. The placement experience affords insight into the diverse aspects of working in the social care practice field. Students will continue the development of their professional identities.
 

This placement must consist of a minimum of 400-hour block placement which will take place over a 5  day week and be completed over a minimum of 13 continuous weeks. The work pattern will reflect the realistic working week and shift pattern of Social Care Workers.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Analyse how policies, legislation etc. underpin the provision of quality health and social care services as required in the agency. (Domain 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 3.10, 3.12, 3.14)

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Learning will occur through practical experiences under supervision on placement.

Module Assessment Strategies

The assessment strategy comprises of assessment by the visiting tutor, a practice placement portfolio, a report from the Practice Educator, and Presentation. Students are required to achieve a pass mark in all elements of the module, to achieve an overall gradeThe module assessment allows for assessment of CORU Standards of Proficiency as follows:

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment procedures will adhere to ATU Sligo policies and procedures and will be discussed and decided at Examination Boards.  Repeat attendance on placement may only take place once.  All practice placement assessment components must be passed individually. If not, the practice placement is recorded as a fail and the student must repeat the entire placement at the next available sitting which is January of the following year. Students cannot progress to their next year of study without all components fully passed.

This placement will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate and incorporate their learning from all
previous modules.

Students will build on and further develop the following skills and competencies:

 

LO 1 Analyse how policies, legislation etc. underpin the provision of quality health and social care services as required in the agency. (Domain 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 3.10, 3.12, 3.14)

Students will demonstrate the ability to analyse the policies, legislation, and core competencies that will underpin their role as professional social care workers and provision of evidence-based and evidence-informed quality care. 

LO 2 Continue to build on the knowledge and understanding of social care issues and best practice through identifying, planning, delivering and evaluating an Action Project under supervision which meets the needs of the agency and its service users. (Domain 3.2, 3.15, 5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8, 5.9, 5.10,5.11 5.12, 5.13, 5.18, 5.19)​

Students will demonstrate their ability to undertake an Action Project which they must carry out following the Social Care Process ASPIRE (assessment, planning, intervention, review, and evaluation) model or similar. this must be responsive to the service user's needs/wishes or preferences and informed consent must be obtained.  This Action Project will be needs-led and evidence-based and enhance the quality of life for the service user/s. 

LO 3 Reflect on and evaluate the progression in their personal and professional development including skills and competencies that they have developed and utilised over the course of this and the previous placement. (Domain 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6)

Students will engage in the evidence based practice approach of critical reflection, evaluating and analysing experiences on placement. Student will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the importance of continuous professional development in social care practice.

LO 4 Demonstrate autonomy and accountability for professional qualification taking responsibility for personal and professional learning and development. (Domain 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17, 1.18, 1.19, 1.20, 1.21, 1.23)

Students will be able to recognise personal responsibility and professional accountability for their actions and be able to justify professional decisions made. They will take responsibility for managing their own workload and completing all professional practice requirements as appropriate. Students will be able to understand the principles of professional decision-making and be able to make informed decisions within the context of competing demands including those relating to ethical conflicts and available resources.
