Description

This practice placement will take place in a professional setting suitable for students of social care practice, providing an opportunity for the student to apply theoretical concepts, knowledge, and skills to practice situations. The placement experience affords insight into the diverse aspects of working in a professional setting. Students will, under supervision, explore the practice of working within a variety of settings and areas and continue the development of their professional identities.

This placement must consist of a minimum of 400-hour block placement which will take place over a 5-day week and be completed over 13 continuous weeks. The work pattern will reflect the realistic working week and shift pattern of Social Care Workers.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Learning will occur through practical experiences and supervision on placement.

Module Assessment Strategies

The assessment strategy comprises of assessment by the visiting tutor, a practice placement portfolio, a report from the Practice Educator, and Presentation. Students are required to achieve a pass mark in all elements of the module, to achieve an overall grade.  The module assessment allows for the assessment of CORU Standards of Proficiency as follows:

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment procedures will adhere to ATU Sligo policies and procedures and will be discussed and decided at Examination Boards.  Repeat attendance on placement may only take place once.  All practice placement assessment components must be passed individually. If not, the practice placement is recorded as a fail and the student must repeat the entire placement at the next available sitting which is January of the following year. Students cannot progress to their next year of study without all components fully passed.

Indicative Syllabus

This placement will provide students with the opportunity to apply and demonstrate their learning from all previous modules.

On placement the student will acquire the following skills and competencies:

LO1 Demonstrate professional autonomy and accountability in practical ways and take responsibility for their own personal and professional development

Students will be exposed to the social care sector where they will begin their professional development in exercising professional autonomy and accountability. They will be able to explain and account for their professional practice and ensure they are working within the guidance of their CORU SCW Code of Conduct and Ethics. 

LO2 Develop and nurture interpersonal and professional relationships in the context of a personalized professional identity.

Students will have their first exposure to engaging in establishing and developing professional relationships with staff, service users, and other professionals in the allied health and social care profession. They will become aware of their own professional identity and the importance of establishing and maintaining professional boundaries in practice. 

LO 3 Indicate the skills (for example creative, interpersonal, reflective, professional), qualities (for example inclusive, ethical practices), competencies, and an understanding of social care concepts that they have used and developed over the course of this placement and how these suggest suitability for this career path.

Students will understand the role of, and be able to demonstrate skills in the use of creative and recreational interventions in social care sectors in order to meet the needs of the service user in the professional practice environment. Students will be required to demonstrate safe and effective implementation of a range of practical, technical, and professional practice skills relating to the specific needs of the service user in a range of social care settings. 

LO 4 Demonstrate effective communication with individuals and groups in both spoken and written formats using appropriate technology and /or creative methods as required.

Students will be able to utilize their knowledge of effective communication in social care such as being able to modify and adapt communication methods and styles, including verbal and nonverbal methods to suit the individual service users considering issues of language, culture, beliefs, and health and/or social care needs.  The student will be required to demonstrate their ability to produce clear, concise, accurate, and objective documentation. Students will also be exposed to technology specific to their sector and will gain an understanding in how to use this effectively. 

LO 5 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of social care concepts and theories from all programme modules completed to date and how they were integrated with and have impacted their practices on placement.

Students will connect the theory, concepts, and frameworks that underpin social care work and demonstrate their underpinning in all assessment components. 

LO 6 Identify, plan, deliver and evaluate an Action Project taking into account the needs and wishes of service users and/or needs of the agency within the context of providing quality health and social care services.

Students are required to undertake an Action Project which they must carry out following the Social Care Process ASPIRE (assessment, planning, intervention, review, and evaluation) model or similar. This must be responsive to the service user's needs/wishes or preferences and informed consent must be obtained. 

LO 7 Demonstrate professionalism throughout the duration of the placement process.

Students will ensure that they comply with all policies and procedures that underpin the professional practice placement process. They will adhere to policies and procedures both within the ATU but also within the placement organization.

Students will demonstrate professionalism throughout placement in their conduct and interactions with all staff and service users throughout placement. Completion of and submission of all requirements of the placement in an organized and timely manner.
