Description
  • This module aims to build on learners' knowledge from year one within the field of social care practice. Students will explore the professional role of the social care practitioner across the sectors, including the guiding principles of appropriate professional practice and professional practice regulations.
  • Students will examine concepts of inclusive practice and recognize the importance of practicing in a non-discriminatory, culturally sensitive way, underpinning core and ethical values in social care practice. Students will be introduced to the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults policy, procedure, and best practices. 
  • Students will know and understand the key concepts of the domains of knowledge that are relevant to their first professional practice placement. 
  • Attendance of this module is mandatory and adheres to the guidance contained in the Attendance Procedure.  
  • Attendance and successful completion of this module is a  pre-requisite for students to proceed to practice placement in semester four.

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module aims to build on your knowledge, within the field of social care practice.

Students will attend a weekly 1-hour lecture and two x two-hour tutorial/skills workshop sessions. The lectures will introduce students to social care skills and competencies in a variety of diverse practice settings, linking learning from theory to practice.  Tutorials/skills workshops will be participatory and encourage students to examine and evaluate learning in preparation for practice.

A variety of teaching and learning techniques will be incorporated including working in smaller groups, case studies, role-play, and guest lectures by social care workers from a wide range of sectors.

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessment of this module is designed to enable learners to consider the personal and professional challenges of social care work and the students own identity. They will consider the challenges of supporting service users within the context of extreme adversity. 

Successful completion of this module is a prerequisite to students progressing to placement in semester 4.  

The module learning outcomes require learners to consider the practical implications of the module in relation to the learner’s new knowledge and skill base, including how learners can apply this to a social care setting.

Indicative Syllabus

LO1 )  Analyse and demonstrate an understanding of professional practice policy requirements reflecting key principles of best practice (Professional Autonomy & Accountability).

Examine the role of the social care practitioner from the historical origins of the "care role" to the journey towards professional regulation. Exploring regulation in social care such as the roles of CORU, HIQA, HSE, and key policy that underpins the work in social care practice. Learners will demonstrate the core roles of social care workers. 

LO 2)   Identify and apply social care practice core values, ethical and inclusive practice, and the impact on the social care sector (Professional Autonomy & Accountability).

Discuss the importance of ethical and professional conduct in social care. Recognizing the importance of, and response to confidentiality and ethical dilemmas that may present in social care. Learners will explore how marginalization, stigma, discrimination, and oppression impact on the individual, group, and community. Learners will be able to promote principles of anti-oppressive practice and anti-discriminatory practice as essential elements of social care practice. 

LO 3) Demonstrate an understanding of child and vulnerable adult safeguarding, policy, procedures, and best practice (Safety and Quality).     

The learner will gain insight into the practical applications of theories, policies, and legislation within social care work. Learners will demonstrate an understanding of the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults and the role of the social care worker in supporting families and ensuring the protection of service users. They will have an understanding of mandatory reporting, Tusla notification systems, and examples of early intervention. 

LO 4) Understand the key concepts of social care practice and tasks of the social care practitioner using real-world examples (Professional Knowledge and Skills).

Students will explore possible placement opportunities, and the role, and responsibilities of the social care practitioner in a range of social care settings.  Learners will produce a professional practice placement portfolio that will demonstrate their knowledge of the role of the social care practitioner. Learners will demonstrate their communication skills and observational skills required in challenging encounters with service users.

LO 5) Explore professional boundaries and challenges within social care practice (Professional Autonomy & Accountability).

Learners will draw on patterns of inequality within Irish society, and the implications for the role of the social care worker, a case study approach is adopted fitting with a social care practice approach and identity. Learners will explore their expectations of professional practice, professional values, and boundaries in social care. They will discuss the significance of supervision and self-care. 

LO 6) Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of effective communication through open disclosure within social care. (Professional Autonomy & Accountability, Communication).

Learners will explore the importance of communicating with service users and their families about their social care supports in open disclosure conversations.
