Description

The module will introduce a range of tools and techniques that can help business professionals uncover important information and make informed decisions based on data. It will introduce basic concepts and approaches of Quantitative Methods and will enable students to solve problems and make decisions using various statistical tools. It will empower students to leverage descriptive statistics and understand basic data visualisation techniques

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Demonstrate an awareness of prominent survey designs and sampling strategies

2.

Use a wide range of spreadsheet functions used in a business environment

3.

Effectively use hypothesis tests for decision making.

4.

Carry out statistical analyses for both cross-sectional and longitudinal data types. 

5.

Perform calculations for measures of correlation and regression.

6.

Engage with various analytical online tools and platforms to understand key business metrics.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The student will engage with the content of the module through lectures and tutorials.

The student will develop and apply their learning through practical examples and case studies. 

Module Assessment Strategies

First assessment is a report that features a descriptive summary of data. 

Second assessment is a complete insurance statistical report.

Repeat Assessments

Report based repeat assessment.

Indicative Syllabus

1. Sampling: Use random and non-random sampling methods, procedures to be followed in conducting a sample survey. 

2. Central Tendency Statistics, Standard Deviation and Time Series.

3. Draw scatter diagrams. Calculate linear regression coefficients, calculate measures of correlation, use the regression line for prediction.

4. Hypothesis Testing: One-Sample Tests of Hypothesis.

5. Navigation and interpretation of website and social media analytical online tools and software.

6. Spreadsheet applications: Use a wide range of spreadsheet functions used in a business environment.
