Description

This module is centred on using computers to capture and manage data efficiently and use that data to support effective decision making in an organisation.  This overall aim of the module is to give the learner the advanced skills required to utilise data effectively.  The learner will therefore develop their analytical and digital literacy skills by building on their previous experience of computer applications to an advanced level.

The learner will gain the advanced skills required to organise and analyse data using a spreadsheet application and use this data to produce reports that are reflective of those required in modern organisations.  In addition to using advanced formulas and functions, this module covers visualisation of data through creating and formatting graphs or charts.  The learner will also advance their experience of using databases and will create a database that reflects the needs of an organisation and be able to capture and extract data from a database that supports business decisions.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Explain how operational and other data can be used to improve decision making within an organisation.

2.

Describe and critique the benefits and obstacles to end-user development.

3.

Select and use the appropriate tools to manage, analyse and report on business data, based on a range of detailed business scenarios.

4.

Create and use a database to effectively capture, manage and effectively use high volumes of relevant data to support business decisions.

5.

Use spreadsheet application to perform complex calculations to support business decisions and to produce sophisticated reports with graphs and charts.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The learner will be given practical demonstration in a computer lab.  A number of examples and scenarios will be provided to demonstrate. The learner will be given material and supports to advance their skill and knowledge which will be made available for easy access through the modules moodle page. A number of key sources of learning material will be used such as linkedin learning and other relevant learning sites.

Module Assessment Strategies

Students will be required to work on projects to produce a database and spreadsheets for business use. Both the database and spreadsheet projects will incorporate elements of end-user computing and business intelligence. MCQ's will also be used to assess the students knowledge.

Indicative Syllabus

Business intelligence:

  • Identify how companies can use operational and other data to make business decisions.
  • Discuss data quality issues.
  • Describe how information systems can be used for both operational and analytical purposes.
  • Explain how web analytics are carried out.

End-user computing:

  • Describe end-user computing, highlighting the advantages and risks involved.
  • Compare and contrast end-user computing with typical SDLC.

Data Management :

  • Identify what data a business should save in a database for a given business problem (eg Stock Control, Sales Management, Customer Profiles, Supplier Details, Questionnaire Analysis) and possible sources for this data.
  • Interpret entity relationship diagrams that model this data.
  • Design, create and maintain database tables using both a simple ERDs and data from spreadsheets.
  • Identify the best tool/combination of tools for facilitating information storage and extraction in given business scenarios.
  • Create a databases and produce forms, queries, reports and macros.

Business Analysis using Spreadsheets:

  • Produce spreadsheet models which can be used to analyse business situations (eg Projected Cash Flow, Sales Forecasting).
  • Import data from databases and perform analyse the data.
  • Use complex formula and functions on data to support operational decision making.
  • Create charts, graphs and apply advanced formatting to produce professional reports.
