Description

In this module, the learner will encounter some theoretical concepts behind the use of computing technology in business and personal contexts, will create a model of a real world problem using spreadsheets and will construct an information website for an organisation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify a range of spreadsheet functions relevant to solving business problems.

2.

Design and implement spreadsheet models based on real a world scenario 

3.

Describe the relevant considerations when creating and maintaining web sites

4.

Design and construct a brochure web site

5.

Summarise concepts relevant to Information Systems - Types and uses, Cyber Security, Business Ethics and Legal Issues.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module will be delivered in weekly online sessions. Both practical and theoretical concepts will be addressed in these classes.  Independent practice outside of class time will also be assigned to learners, in order to improve their technical proficiency using software applications

Module Assessment Strategies

The is will be 60% continuous assessment with 40% final exam. The 60% will primarily assess the the practical component of the course while the 40% will address the theoretical elements.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat exams and practical assessments will be made available when required

Indicative Syllabus

Spreadsheet Applications Development:

  • Functions - Financial, Date & Time, Statistical, Lookup & Reference, Text, Logical, Information, Sub-totals;
  • Manipulate data - sort, filter, validation, pivot tables;
  • Integration of EXCEL with other packages - Importing and exporting data;
  • Structuring a spreadsheet - design, layout, presentation;
  • Model real world problems- how to take text based problem and build a solution in Excel;
  • Dealing with Risk and Uncertainty: sensitivity analysis, goal seek, scenarios;
  • Presenting and interpreting of information - Charts(selection, formatting, time series vs cross sectional) and report generation.

Web Development:

  • Guidelines for creating a website;
  • HCI design guidelines;
  • Web Based Development tools – free online development tools versus locally installed development tools;
  • Content, Text. images, video, tables etc.;
  • Domain names, hosting (requirements, costing);
  • Image creation versus acquiring using various tools – Google Images, Photoshop, Picasa, Pixlr, Paint, etc.;
  • Digital marketing - search engine optimisation.

Theory:

  • IT security − purpose, threats, prevention, social engineering;
  • Information Systems – a brief overview of IS in the business world;
  • Business Ethics − definitions, approaches, ethical analysis using case studies;
  • Legal issues − data protection, freedom of information, intellectual property rights, social networking, policy and procedures;
  • Introduction to digital / social media marketing – traditional versus modern marketing (eg billboard versus Facebook);
  • E commerce - definition, role, advantages, pillars, payment systems - PayPal, gateway system.
