The aim of this module is to provide the learner with the skills to create word documents & spreadsheets and to manipulate data and information effectively. They will also consider fundamental elements of computer systems and platforms such as hardware & software, security, privacy and the digitisation of business.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Demonstrate an ability to effectively use an email, contacts and calendar management system.
Safely manage files using folders on a variety of storage devices and platforms.
Prepare professional documents using contemporary Word Processing software.
Capture and manipulate data using contemporary Spreadsheet Software to produce meaningful outputs.
Discuss considerations relevant to the purchase and use of computer hardware, software and peripheral devices.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered fully online. Weekly classes will consist of both lecture and practical tutorial sessions. Students will be encouraged to collaborate during practical sessions and asynchronously. Where feasible third party materials will be used to assist in the delivery and assessment of practical word processing and spreadsheet skills.
Module Assessment Strategies
Assessment will consist of practical demonstration of skills and theoretical concepts that will be assessed by online quiz and other open book assessment elements.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat assessments will be scheduled for learners as required in line with IT Sligo's examinations calendar.
Indicative Syllabus
Electronic Communication:
- Different email & calendar management systems;
- Creating, deleting, forwarding, replying to emails;
- Email etiquette;
- Creating Email Rules - out of office, blocking emails, filing emails in folders;
- Creating & managing Calendar Appointments (using & syncing);
- Contacts - individuals & groups;
- Other productivity features.
File Management:
- File/folder creation, deletion, moving, renaming;
- File formats;
- Using networks, cloud storage, peripheral devices;
- File backup & security;
- Sharing access to files.
Word Processing:
- Different word processing systems / platforms;
- Creating, saving and accessing documents;
- Creating and formatting documents - font, paragraphs, layout;
- Adding objects to documents - tables, images, charts, headers/footers, referencing;
- Finalising documents - spelling & grammar, table of contents, bibliography;
- Working collaboratively - tracking changes, sharing.
Spreadsheets:
- Purpose, features, benefits & drawbacks;
- Different types of spreadsheets;
- Data entry, editing, copying & moving data;
- Formatting & conditional formatting;
- Spreadsheet structure, layout & views, inserting/deleting/modifying columns & rows;
- Using formulae - basics, cell referencing (relative/absolute), ranges, dragging/pasting;
- Common functions;
- Presenting outputs - Creating charts, headers & footers, freezing panes, locking & protecting worksheets;
- Freezing panes;
- Working with multiple worksheets;
Computing Technology & Platforms:
- Purchasing / using hardware;
- Purchasing / using software solutions;
- Cloud Technologies / SaaS;
- Software products and platforms;
- Outsourcing.
