The aim of this module is to provide the learner with the skills to create a word documents, spreadsheet & manipulate a database effectively plus a review of the basic computer skills, file management and internet manipulation.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Manage folders and files
Create wordprocessing documents
Operate in - house email software
Manipulate the Internet
Creating a Spreadsheet , data input, formatting, data manipulation, reporting generation
Using a Database, creating forms, queries generation, reports generation
Theoretical Investigation into Modern Computing, Buy appropriate Hardware and software, IT Security, Information Systems, Business Ethics and Legal

Teaching and Learning Strategies
The class will be a combination of a 2.5 hour slot at night. Both Practical and theory will be taught.
Module Assessment Strategies
The is will be 60% continuous assessment with 40% final exam. The 60% will primarily asssess the the practical component of the course while the 40% will address the theoretical elements

1. File Management
- file/folder creation, deletion, moving, renaming, etc
- different file formats (eg docx, xlsx, html, etc)
- familiarisation with IT Sligo network - eg H drive, S drive, etc
2. Word Processing
- define software - uses, purposes, etc
- different types - MS Word, Cloud Computing, etc
- data entry & editing· formatting (font, size, line spacing, orientation, etc)
- importing/exporting data
- layout/structure - tables, columns
- spellcheck
- headers/footers,footnotes & endnotes
- charting & inserting images
- table of contents & indexing
- styles
- forms
- mail merge
- printing
- find/replace
- tracking modifications
3. Electronic Communication
- different types - MS Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, etc
- email etiquette
- creating, deleting, forwarding, replying to emails
- proper use of subject line, cc and bcc

- contacts - individuals & groups

5. Using a Database
(the purpose of this topic is primarily database query & report generation − NOT database design & development)
- purpose, features, benefits & drawbacks
- different types of databases − MS Access, Open Office, Google docs, etc
- creating forms for inserting/editing data − labels, textboxes, command buttons, formatting, etc
- creating queries to manipulate data − simple (single/multiple fields), criteria, user−specified, calculations, sort, filter
- creating reports based upon tables and queries
- exporting and importing from access to other software
6. Computer Theory
- IT security − purpose, threats, prevention, social engineering
- Information Systems – a study of IS in the business world eg banking, education, customer service, resource planning, etc and the identification of their components, procedures, data, benefits/drawbacks, costs, etc
- Business Ethics − definitions, approaches, ethical analysis using case studies.
- Legal issues − data protection, freedom of information, intellectual property rights, social networking, policy andprocedures
- Introduction to digital / social media marketing – traditional versus modern marketing (eg billboard versus Facebook)
