Description

This module provides students with an understanding of and practical experience in the use of Excel and Access applications. The student will be able to model real world problems using spreadsheets and will also learn how to manipulate a database effectively. The student will acquire an understanding of the theoretical aspects of the business environment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Design and implement spreadsheet models based on real world scenarios

Use a wide range of spreadsheet functions used in a business environment

Using a database - create tables, forms, queries and reports

4.

Acquire a knowledge of the theoretical aspects of the business environment.

Indicative Syllabus

LO1 - Design and implement spreadsheet models based on real world scenarios

  • Taking a text based problem and building it in excel
  • Structuring a spreadsheet - design, layout, presentation
  • Model real world problems. This should reinforce problem based learning

 

LO2 - Use a wide range of spreadsheet functions used in a business environment

  • Dealing with risk and uncertainty: sensitivity analysis, goal seek, scenarios, data tables
  • Functions - financial, date & time, statistical, lookup & reference, text, logical
  • Absolute and relative cell referencing
  • Manipulating data - sort, filter, validation, pivot tables
  • Presentation and interpretation of information - charts (selection, formatting, labelling, etc.)

 

LO3 - Using a database - create tables, forms, queries and reports

  • Examining existing relational database designs 
  • Adding a simple table to an existing database
  • Creating forms for inserting/editing data 
  • Creating queries to manipulate data 
  • Creating reports for presentation & display

 

LO4 - Acquire a knowledge of the theoretical aspects of the business environment.

  • Cyber Security - Purpose. Intentional/unintentional threats. Difficulties in protecting information systems. Cyber security controls. Social engineering, phishing, ransomware
  • Outsourcing
  • E-commerce, E-business, types of E-commerce, E-commerce business models, electronic payment systems, benefits/limitations of E-commerce
  • Legal Issues - data protection, GDPR,  freedom of information, intellectual property rights, social networking
  • Introduction to project management
  • Digital marketing
