Description

The module introduces learners to the structure and functions of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. The module relates the structure and functions of biological macromolecules and gives an introduction to Molecular Biology.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe the structure and functions of the eukaryotic cells and cell
organelles

2.

Illustrate the structure and functions of prokaryotic cells

3.

Outline the factors that affect enzyme activity

4.

Describe the structure and functions of biological macromolecules

5.

Describe cell division in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and illustrate the basics of molecular biology

6.

Outline mammalian cellular bioenergetics.

7.

Communicate information accurately and effectively using written, visual
and numeral forms

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The Biology for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) module will be delivered part-time and will include lectures, laboratory practicals.  Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment where appropriate.

Module Assessment Strategies

The Biology for GMP module is 50% Continuous Assessment and 50% Final exam.

Laboratory skills and report-writing ability are assessed as part of the practical work performed during the module (50%).  There will be MCQs (50%) and there will be a Final Exam (50%)

The student must achieve 40% overall to pass the module

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam
