BIOC08009 2023 Advanced Clinical Biochemistry
The principles and processes of Biochemistry relating to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common human medical conditions, disorders and diseases. Understand Vascular, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Gastrointestinal and Neuro physiology and pathophysiology of the human body. Understand the biochemical foundation to clinical parameters in medical diagnostics, treatment and patient evaluation. Interpretation of medical laboratory tests and data to diagnose and manage common conditions and disorders.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify appropriate medical tests; present and interpret data correctly
Summarise the physiology and pathophysiology of the human body for a range of common conditions
Explain the Biochemical principles in a range of preventative, diagnostic and treatment strategies and modalities
Evaluate biochemical parameters related to a range of medical diagnostics and testing
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Lectures will expose learners to key concepts supported by laboratory-based practicals.
The VLE will support the module as a repository for learning material but also providing opportunities for self-directed learning through the provision of short formative assessment quizzes and activities including case study work. Module materials embrace the principles of a Universal Design for Learning approach.
Students will be expected to actively engage with reading material and self-directed learning activities to promote integration of prior knowledge and assimilation of new specialist knowledge.
A variety of methods of instruction such as discussion, group work, interactive exercises, use of online resources and/or use of audio/visual material will be provided. Core skills will be embedded into all modules to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. This may include academic writing, oral presentations, reading techniques or research abilities.
Module Assessment Strategies
This module will be assessed by 50% Continuous assessment which will be ongoing throughout the semester and 50% final exams. CA will be designed using data to replicate cases studies of relevance to the clinical measurement physiology field.
The pass mark for this module will be 50%.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat CA will be issued for students needing repeat assessment.

Biomedical scientists are the foundation of modern healthcare, from cancer screening to diagnosing HIV, from blood transfusion for surgery to food poisoning and infection control. Without biomedical scientists, the diagnosis of disease, the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment, andresearch into the causes and cures of disease would not be possible. The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series has been written to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today. It draws together essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice to show how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled to the analyticalapproaches that lead to diagnosis. Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a Biomedical Scientist may be exposed - from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science.Clinical Biochemistry provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the biochemical basis of disease processes, and how these diseases can be investigated in the biomedical laboratory. New clinical case studies have been added to the second edition, to further emphasize the link between theoryand practice and help engage students with the subject.
2010-01-19 Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations Wiley-Liss
ISBN 0470281731 ISBN-13 9780470281734
A comprehensive and fully updated edition filled with over 250 clinical correlations This book presents a clear and precise discussion of the biochemistry of eukaryotic cells, particularly those of mammalian tissues, relates biochemical events at a cellular level to the subsequent physiological processes in the whole animal, and cites examples of abnormal biochemical processes in human disease. The organization and content are tied together to provide students with the complete picture of biochemistry and how it relates to human diseases. Loaded with new material and chapters and brimming with detailed, full-color illustrations that clearly explain associated concepts, this seventh edition is an indispensable tool for students and professionals in the medical or health sciences.
