BIOC06001 2019 Biochemistry
This module enables students to explain the functions, structures and properties of biomolecules including their roles in disease. Additionally, the development of laboratory-related skills is facilitated among students.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Describe the structure, function and characteristics of, carbohydrates, fats, nucleic acids and proteins (including those used to treat disease).
Demonstrate knowledge of nature, function and properties of enzymes (including enzyme inhibition and its pharmaceutical applications) and experimentally determine enzyme activity along with some key properties.
Review the fundamental characteristics of body defence systems including antibodies and experimentally determine the presence of antigen using immunoassay techniques.
Demonstrate proficiency in the performance of a variety of laboratory techniques.
Utilize scientific knowledge and technical procedure to analyse, evaluate and explain specific experimental outcomes through oral and written communication.
