BIO09047 2013 Downstream Bioprocessing Practical
This module covers much of the practical knowledge, know-how and skills associated with downstream processing in a typical modern biopharmaceutical processing facility. The relevant learning is acquired through the completion of a sequence of laboratory-based and pilot-plant based practicals and experiments that are designed to impart the required knowledge, know-how and skills.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Demonstrate a range of knowledge and skill in standard and specialised techniques in protein capture and purification at lab. scale operation.
Demonstrate a range of knowledge and skill in standard and specialised techniques in protein capture and purification at pilot plant scale operation.
Interpret and critically evaluate the data and results obtained from the various downstream processing lab. practicals.
Demonstrate the ability and competence to manage a process in a quasi-GMP environment and take responsibility for managing a team.
Demonstrate research capabilities in the overall downstream bioprocessing area.
Evaluate ongoing education and training needs in a continuous professional development environment.
Demonstrate effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
Module Assessment Strategies
As this is a practical-based module attendance at the NIBRT or IT Sligo training laboratories is a requirement. A certain amount of the assessment work will take place at these locations. The remaining assessment approach for this module will be 100% Continuous Assessment with a range of assessment methods employed including some of the following: short-form assessment exams incl. MCQ’s/SAQ’s, project assignments/reports, practical/project work, essays, oral presentations, vivas etc.
Module Dependencies
Indicative Syllabus
The range of lab-based practicals covered may include some or all of the following items: filter integrity testing; centrifugation for cell separation purposes; buffer preparation; specific chromatography practicals based around different chromatography columns; gel-filtration / size-exclusion chromatography; cell separation/cell debris removal using hollow-fibre microfiltration; protein concentration using ultrafiltration; protein concentration and buffer exchange using ultrafiltration / diafiltration; normalised water flow permeability (NWP) test of a filter.
The range of pilot-plant based practicals covered may include some or all of the following items: disc-stack centrifugation for cell separation; depth filtration and microfiltration; industrial-scale filter integrity testing; column packing; theory and practice of industrial-scale chromatography skids; theory and practice of industrial-scale ultrafiltration / diafiltration skids; normal flow filtration; viral inactivation technologies.
