BIO08048 2019 Recombinant Drug Development and Engineering
The subject aim is to introduce the students to the drug discovery and development process. The subject will compare traditional pharmaceutical drug development to biopharmaceutical drug development. The module will include an in depth study of the different modes and methods of recombinant protein expression in different cellular hosts. The module will introduce the analysis and manipulation of recombinant protein expression in the biopharmaceutical sector.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Differentiate between irrational and rational drug design. Describe the methods of drug target identification and validation.
Outline the molecular methods and components required to characterize, clone and express a gene of interest.
Categorize the essential steps in the design and regulation of a recombinant expression system.
Examine methods of verifying the functional and molecular characteristics of the recombinant protein.
Perform research on a relevant topic and analyse, evaluate and communicate and explain scientific data relating to Recombinant Drug development.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
'This module will be delivered part-time in the form of on line tutorials augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).
Module Assessment Strategies
The assessment approach for this module will be 100% Continuous Assessment with a range of assessment methods employed including some of the following: short-form assessment exams incl. MCQ's, project assignments, practical work, essays, oral presentations, vivas etc.
The miniproject is a MANDATORY form of assessment for any modules on this programme with a miniproject component.
