Description

The project aims to provide students with the opportunity to apply and integrate the skills and knowledge they have gained on the programme of study to date. The student should bring the learning from the modules covered in the course to conceive, define and agree a project which is relevant to the subject matter they are studying. A supervisor will be assigned to each project. The supervisor will act as a guide in agreeing the relevance and scope of the project and monitor the progress on a regular basis. Updates will be sent to the supervisor on an agreed basis.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify a problem which needs to be addressed of importance to the organisation.

2.

Complete and present a comprehensive literature survey report on the results of their preliminary study.

3.

Utilise an appropriate structured approach to manage the project with realistic, interim and overall project objectives.

4.

Enhance research skills and abilities and analytical techniques as well as problem-solving capabilities.

5.

Present project results with Executive Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations and discuss the approach taken and results achieved.

6.

Enhance communication skills through presentations, report writing and defense of their research findings.

Module Assessment Strategies

The overall assessment strategy will be a combination of continuous assessment of student ongoing performance throughout the duration of the project; review and assessment of the final report by tutor and second reviewer; review and assessment of the project presentation viva by the tutor and second reviewer.

The miniproject is a MANDATORY form of assessment for any modules on this programme with a miniproject component.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will undertake an in depth study of their selected project area. At the outset the student will be required to submit a:

(1) Literature review (6,000 words maximum).

(2) Project Plan including:

a. Critical evaluation of the most appropriate analytical method.

b. Gantt chart with timelines.

c. Research questions to be addressed in the investigation, and outline methodologies to implement the research strategy.

The student will analyse their results and prepare a written dissertation on the research project (maximum 10,000 words). Critical interpretation of data produced by statistical techniques will be encouraged in order to validate interpretations and conclusions drawn. The project module is essentially an independent, self-directed study, reflecting the level 8 stage in the learning programme. However each student is allocated a project supervisor who will liaise  regularly with the students for individual tutorials, guidance and review. Guidance will be timetabled with their tutor.

Outline of Stages in Process:

1. Agreement of project title between supervisor and student. 2. Literature survey and submission of project plan with Gant chart. 3. Completion of practical elements of project. 4. Analysis. 5. Submission of dissertation. 6. Project Presentation to staff and students. 7. Viva examination by internal /or external examiners. 8. The bound dissertation is double marked by the internal supervisor and another lecturer.
