Description

In this module the student will develop an overview of the broad field of Medical Biotechnology and will explore many of the various areas that contribute to this discipline. The module will include a brief history of Medical Biotechnology, including some key breakthrough moments in history. Furthermore the module will cover current key technological areas of scientific, economic and social interest and as well as targeted technologies of the future.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Understand the fundamentals of how breakthroughs and advances in Medical Biotechnology happen

2.

Understand the history and development of the Biotechnology industry.

3.

Identify the methodology of product/process development in Medical Biotechnology and how novel intervention points are identified and exploited.

4.

Identify safety, ethical, regulatory, and proprietary issues of the application of biotechnology to industry.

5.

Describe the common applications of biotechnology in medicine and diagnostics

6.

Develop an understanding of the medical device industry and the development of some key technologies in this field

7.

Understand the life span of a typical medical biotechnology product from development through testing to manufacture and eventual discontinuation

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will be introduced to the many diverse subject areas of Medical Biotechnology and will learn and understand their impact on medicine, diagnostics and the biomedical manufacturing industry

Module Assessment Strategies

The module will be assessed entirely by continuous assessment. This will comprise two Multiple Choice Exams and two written assignments staggered throughout the semester

Repeat Assessments

Students will be asked to re-submit any assignment or re-sit and MCQ that they did not pass, where there overall grade is a fail

Applications of biotechnology in medicine

Introduction to the most commonly produced biopharmaceutical products and their methods of production.

Understanding of the basic principles of biomaterials and biosensors
