Description

This subject aims to give the student a high level of professionalism in relation to their working practice. Emphasis is placed on developing communication skills both written and verbal, to confidently promote practice. Appropriate skills to make applications for a variety of opportunities will be developed through workshops and seminars and group work. Awareness of a range of practices in relation to exhibiting and promoting work will be delivered through a range of seminars, presentations project work and visits to group studios/galleries.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

 Have the ability to confidently make appropriate applications for exhibitions and related career opportunities.

Be familiar with a range of modes for presenting and promoting their practice.

Be confident in documenting and cataloging a body of work to a high standard.

Reflect on and evaluate their own art practice in relation to relevant careers and opportunities. 

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module initially takes the form of seminars, as students establish their projects there will be group discussion and presentation of updates. This is allied to formal and informal presentations. 

Field trips to galleries, artists studios and related areas and the visiting artist/lecturer programme play an important part in the module.

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessment will take the form of two projects, one each to be completed at the end of each semester. The first project will be a mock application for a group exhibition/ public art project and can be executed either in small groups or individually. The second project will be in small groups and consists of  organising and promoting a pop up exhibition or giving an individual artists talk.  Each of the submissions will be awarded 50% of the grades. All of the learning outcomes will be assessed through the two submissions. 
 

Repeat Assessments

Late submission of projects beyond set deadlines without valid reason will be subject to penalties. Late submission of a presentation may be be accepted on disk if appropriate documentation fo absence is presented.

Indicative Syllabus

Semester 1 

*Making Applications and Proposals.

1 Making an application pack.
Writing artist statements and project proposals.
Covering letters, Curriculum Vitae, Biographies and filling application forms.
Presenting effective budgets, making plans and maquettes for applications and project proposals.

2 Documenting Artworks 
Document artwork on digital format for general viewing, internet and publication.
Image manipulation. Labelling and cataloging digital documentation.

*At the end of this semester students make an application pack for a group exhibition or a proposal for a public art project. These elements of the syllabus may involve students working in small groups. (here students will be asked to keep and submit minutes of group meetings as part of the project).  Students will be asked to make an individual or group presentations outlining and illustrating their application. 

 Semester 2

Exhibition and Promotion

1 Understanding Exhibiting 
Timelines for preparing to exhibit.
Installing/destalling and presenting artworks.

2 Promoting an exhibition
Using social media to promote practice.
Press releases and previews
Artists talks and other strategies for effectively publicising an exhibition/project.

*At the end of this semester students will be asked to make a group pop up exhibition or give an artist talk to staff and peers.

Making a Group Exhibition
At the end of this semester students will work in groups to curate, organise and publicise a pop up exhibition, either on campus or at an external location.

Artist Talk 
At the end of this semester students will work individually to give a short illustrated presentation on their practice to their peer group and staff.
The presentation should last approximately 10 minutes and include approx.10 digitally documented images of their own work as well as approximately 5 images of other artists work which will place their practice in context.
