The course enables the student to become autonomous as a learner, practitioner and professional. It aims to produce a motivated and committed graduate capable of making a body of self-directed, reflective, artwork with an understanding of appropriate presentation and display strategies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Show expertise and skills in their chosen area of practice (demonstrating a capacity to analyse, synthesise, summarise and critically judge information)


Be creative, flexible and resourceful in their manipulation of materials, processes and ideas.


Demonstrate an ability to produce quality work that is innovative or challenging within a contemporary Fine Art context.


Demonstrate an ability to understand, articulate and develop the relationship with audience through strategies of making and presentation.


Display proficiency in observation, investigation, enquiry, visualisation and making.


Articulate ideas and information clearly in visual, oral and written forms.


Work with, develop and respond to personal strengths and needs.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

A variety of teaching and learning strategies are employed: The module is delivered by a number of different tutors who inspect and supervise the learner's ongoing research - this is primarily by individual tutorial within a class context. These tutorials are supplemented by a number of other methods, which may include group critique, peer review, demonstration/workshops, Field trips, the Visiting Artist Programme and occasional lecture/seminars.



Module Assessment Strategies

The learner is monitored weekly throughout the semester however assessment is based on an end-of-stage 'Degree Show'.  Related back-up research, artworks and studies will be taken into account but the emphasis is on the selected works, their interrelation and the display strategies used.  There will also be a formal mid-semester review.

Repeat Assessments

If failed the student is required re-stage a degree show the following year (along with that year's cohort)

Indicative Syllabus

The student engages with the art-making process, personally identifying with their material through ongoing gathering of information, testing of solutions and consideration of the nature of these outcomes. This process occurs within a framework of research, discourse, reflection, production and, ultimately, display of a body of artwork.

Students must address their work in terms of methods, materials and content. They must relate their practice to associated historical and contemporary concerns within the discipline and in broader cultural fields.

On completion of a body of work students will participate in an end of semester/year exhibition: The student is expected to critically evaluate their year's work and to make a coherent selection that they will exhibit in an appropriate and well considered manner.
