ART08009 2019 Studio Practice 1: Preparing the groundwork

Demonstrate an ability to identify a framework, set a personalised brief and respond appropriately (by researching independently and in a self-directed manner, setting goals, managing workloads and meeting deadlines)

Have accrued a thorough and selective knowledge, and focused critical understanding, of the works of other practitioners appropriate to the learner’s creative development.

Developed awareness of the nature of personal enquiry and identity and begun to articulate critical arguments in support of their work.

Address, and respond to, practice related problems through risk taking, independent making and critical reflection.

Gained a thorough knowledge of appropriate health and safety standards.

A variety of teaching and learning strategies are employed: The module is delivered by a number of different tutors who inspect and supervise the learner's ongoing research - this is mainly by individual tutorial within a class context. These tutorials are supplemented by a number of other methods including group critique, peer review, demonstration/workshops, Field trips, Visiting Artist Programme and occasional lecture/seminars.

While the learner is monitored weekly throughout the semester the assessment is based on an end-of-semester presentation of a body of work (including related research and studies) There will also be a formal mid-semester review.

The student can resubmit a portfolio of work the following autumn.

At the outset all students make an outline presentation (to staff and their peer group) with examples of previous works and concerns, setting the context for current research and possible future directions. The learner is required to write a self-directed project brief that summarises their areas of interest. A direction for work is agreed upon in consultation with staff before students move to a developmental stage where they produce a body of work that is subject to self-questioning and adjustment.

The student is expected to work in an independent manner, to be resourceful in gathering information and to amass a body of personalised source material. It is expected that visual journals will be kept, regularly updated and made available to tutors.

The student engages with the making process, personally identifying with their material through ongoing gathering of information, testing of solutions and consideration of the nature of these outcomes. This process occurs within a framework of research, production, discourse, reflection and, ultimately, display of a body of artwork.
