Description

This subject aims to deepen the student's critical understanding of drawing practice and to introduce a variety of examples of contemporary practice. It is expected that the student will generate a body of work that develops in tandem with ideas and methods pursued in concurrent studio modules.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate a deepened conceptual understanding of the possibilities of drawing.

2.

Have developed the ability to reflect critically upon their individual drawing practice.

3.

Have explored a range of materials and approaches to expressing their ideas.

4.

Have created a body of work which displays an innovative, personalised approach to drawing, appropriate skills and sensitivity to materials and content and methodology.

5.

Confidently pursue a specific line of enquiry within the discipline.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

A variety of teaching and learning strategies are employed: The tutor monitors and supervises the learner's ongoing research - this is primarily by individual tutorial within a class context and by the delivery of illustrated talk/discussions that are intended to broaden the students' theoretical knowledge as well as develop their ability to articulate their ideas.  Learning may also be supplemented by a number of other approaches, which may include the provision of relevant texts, group critique, peer review, demonstration/workshops, Field trips and the Visiting Artist Programme.

Module Assessment Strategies

Practical work will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and there will be a formal mid-semester review. Assessment will take place at the end of the semester: At this point each of the learning outcomes are measured in relation to the art work presented and the back-up portfolio (which may include accompanying texts and/or documentation)

Repeat assessments are available in the following autumn.

Indicative Syllabus

Based on the body of work developed in the previous semester, the student will identify a specific line of enquiry that they would like to pursue. In consultation with tutors, they will initiate an evolving body of research that extends throughout the semester.
Emphasis is placed on exploring alternative, but parallel, approaches to content development and methodologies prescribed in the students' other realms of study.
There will be an accompanying series of illustrated talks focusing on elements of Post-World War II drawing practice and especially on recent developments.
