ART07049 2019 Practice 1: Establishing Direction

Relate to, and place their practice within, other relevant historical and contemporary Fine Art developments.

Have developed a flexible approach to materials, concepts and processes.

Recognise and respond to learning needs and be able to participate in critical discussion in relation to one's work.

Have moved towards becoming an independent learner who can resolve problems through practical risk taking and reflection.

Have begun to identify and articulate ideas in relation to their practice.

Document and catalogue a body of their own work.

A variety of teaching and learning strategies are employed: The module is delivered by a number of different tutors who monitor and supervise the learner's ongoing research - this is mainly by individual tutorial within a class context. The role of the tutors at this level is to be responsive rather than instructive - tutors will meet with students individually on a regular basis offering a variety of insights to project work and progress made.

In response, the student will have to consider the different viewpoints being offered by the range of tutors. The choices the learner makes in relation to the different critical perspectives is what enables the development of an individual 'voice'.

These tutorials are supplemented by a number of other methods including group critique, peer review, demonstration/workshops, Field trips, Visiting Artist Programme and occasional lecture/seminars.

Practical work will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and there will be a formal mid-semester review. Assessment will take pace at the end of the semester. At this point each of the learning outcomes are measured in relation to the art work presented, the supporting portfolio, and accompanying texts and documentation.

This module can be repeated in the summer for consideration at the Autumn exam board meeting.

Research/project

The student will be asked to outline a particular project they wish to pursue in a short written proposal. This proposal should form the basis of visual research that leads to more substantial investigation with material, leading to the completion of considered art works.

Development of critical faculties

The student will participate in group critiques and tutorials, involving analysis, interpretation and assessment of their ongoing project and results.

Professional practice elements

Students will write texts on their work and participate in workshops in photographic documentation and digital image editing.
