ART06090 2019 Printmaking 2 (Advanced Printmaking Techniques)
Learners will develop and extend their knowledge of workshop practice acquired in 'Printmaking 1'. Screen-printing, Lino-block and etching techniques will be introduced. The historical and artistic development of screen-printing, lino-block and etching techniques will be explored through illustrated lectures and discussion. Learners will practice screen-printing, lino-block and etching techniques through a themed project. Workshops will be based on the teaching and practice of a specific skill-set, namely a range of screen-printing techniques including paper stencils and photo-based stencils, lino-block including single colour and reduction methods, and a range of etching techniques including hard-ground, soft-ground and aquatint.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Have extended their general knowledge of printmaking techniques and practices.
Be capable of making printed images using basic screen-printing, lino-block and etching techniques.
Have acquired knowledge of the artistic and historical development of etching, lino-block and screen-printing practices.
Develop printed imagery through a themed engagement with etching, lino-block and screen-printing processes.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Workshop demonstrations and practices will include;
The preparation of mesh screens, the preparation and processing of paper and photo-based stencils, the printing of screen-printed images.
The preparation of metal plates, the preparation and processing of hard and soft ground techniques, of aquatint techniques, and of printing etched plates.
The preparation of lino-blocks, cutting blocks, single colour and multi-colour reduction methods, and printing lino-blocks.
Illustrated lectures will demonstrate the historical and artistic development of fine art printmaking, especially through the techniques of etching, lino-block and screen-printing.
One to one tutorials will support the conceptual and thematic development of students work.
Field trips and visiting artists will complement the students work programme.
Module Assessment Strategies
Assessments will take place in the final week of the semester. A mid-semester review with suitable feedback will help monitor the students progress. The assessment will be based on an evaluation of presented course work. Students will present relevant work made during the semester, to include preparatory drawings and notes, notebooks, proofs and final prints. Students work ethic, capacity to understand and develop technical strategies, and a demonstration of thematic comprehension and development will be considered. The effective development, execution and presentation of work will be evaluated.
Repeat Assessments
A comprehensive repeat project brief will be offered to students who fail to achieve a pass grade or better for the module. The repeat project will include etching and screen-printing requirements. The deadline for the repeat project will be August 31 of the relevant academic year. In evaluating the repeat project work the effective development, execution and presentation of the project work will be considered.
