Description
An introduction to fine art printmaking. The learner will be introduced to the basic principles underlying printmaking and to its historical and artistic contexts. Learners will explore visual ideas through a themed project. Workshops will be based on the teaching and practice of a specific skill set, namely mono-printing, carborundum and dry-point techniques. Basic workshop procedures will be introduced. Students will become familiar with a range of printmaking tools, materials and processes.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
1.
Understand the basic principles of fine art printmaking and be versed in the range of printmaking techniques covered in the semester.
2.
Have some understanding of the potential of printmaking as an art-making strategy.
3.
Produce, interpret, manipulate and develop imagery through the exploitation of basic printmaking processes and techniques.
4.
Be capable of working safely and effectively in the printmaking workshop.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Students will learn through a direct engagement with printmaking materials and processes.
The principles underlying printmaking processes will be explained.
The appropriate use of tools, materials and workshop equipment will be demonstrated.
Workshop demonstrations will include the preparation of appropriate matrices, the properties and characteristics of printmaking inks, types of paper and correct preparation and handling, and registration techniques for single and multiple plate images.
Through one to one tutorials students will gain an understanding of conceptual and thematic approaches to printmaking.
Field trips and visiting artists will complement the students work programme.
Module Assessment Strategies
Assessments will take place in the final week of the semester. A mid-semester review with suitable feedback will help monitor the students progress. The assessment will be based on an evaluation of presented course work. Students will present relevant work made during the semester, to include preparatory drawings and notes, notebooks, proofs and final prints. Students work ethic, capacity to understand and develop technical strategies, and a demonstration of thematic comprehension and development will be considered. The effective development, execution and presentation of work will be evaluated.
Repeat Assessments
A comprehensive repeat project brief will be offered to students who fail to achieve a pass grade or better for the module. The repeat project will include mono-printing, dry-point and carborundum requirements. The deadline for the repeat project will be August 31 of the relevant academic year. In evaluating the repeat project work the effective development, execution and presentation of the project work will be considered.
Indicative Syllabus
The semester highlights the cultural significance of fine art printmaking and the historical background to printmaking processes.
Learners will be introduced to the layout and general operations of the printmaking workshop.
There will be introductory workshops in mono-printing, carborundum and dry-point techniques.
Health and safety in the workshop will be explained and practised.
