Description

An introduction to fine art printmaking. The learner will be introduced to the basic principles underlying printmaking and to its historical and artistic contexts. Learners will explore visual ideas through a themed project. Workshops will be based on the teaching and practice of a specific skill set, namely mono-printing, carborundum and dry-point techniques. Basic workshop procedures will be introduced. Students will become familiar with a range of printmaking tools, materials and processes.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Understand the basic principles of fine art printmaking and be versed in the range of printmaking techniques covered in the semester.

The appropriate use of tools, materials and workshop equipment will be demonstrated.

Workshop demonstrations will include the preparation of appropriate matrices, the properties and characteristics of printmaking inks, types of paper and correct preparation and handling, and registration techniques for single and multiple plate images.

Through one to one tutorials students will gain an understanding of conceptual and thematic approaches to printmaking.

Field trips and visiting artists will complement the students work programme.

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessments will take place in the final week of the semester. A mid-semester review with suitable feedback will help monitor the students progress. The assessment will be based on an evaluation of presented course work. Students will present relevant work made during the semester, to include preparatory drawings and notes, notebooks, proofs and final prints.  Students work ethic, capacity to understand and develop technical strategies, and a demonstration of thematic comprehension and development will be considered. The effective development, execution and presentation of work will be evaluated.

Repeat Assessments

A comprehensive repeat project brief will be offered to students who fail to achieve a pass grade or better for the module. The repeat project will include mono-printing, dry-point and carborundum requirements. The deadline for the repeat project will be August 31 of the relevant academic year. In evaluating the repeat project work the effective development, execution and presentation of the project work will be considered.

Printmaking is a practical and comprehensive guide to printmaking techniques. This fully updated edition includes expanded chapters on digital and mixed media processes, and a brand new 'Print & Make' chapter, which explores the opportunities for creative expression within the many processes available to print makers. The more traditional techniques of relief, intaglio, collograph, lithography, screen printing and monoprint have also been refreshed with the addition of new images showing a broader range of subject matter, including more contemporary prints and international artists. A new section on the traditions and techniques of Japanese woodblock printing completes the update. Each technique is explored from the development of the printing or digital matrix, through the different stages of creation to image output. Clear step-by-step illustrations, interviews with contemporary printmakers and a wide range of images showing the best of cutting-edge printmaking today offer an inspirational resource. Guidance on how to set up a print studio, sections on troubleshooting techniques and the inclusion of up-to-date lists of suppliers, workshops and galleries make this an essential volume for beginner and experienced printmakers alike.
