Description

The course will focus on advanced issues of design problem solving including the use of technology to support design development. It looks at both new and existing buildings and examines how detail relates to broader design concepts, and how to bring together all aspects of the design process. The module will cover ecological footprints, building fabric and materials, embodied energy, low-zero carbon buildings, and construction materials technology to aid the conservation of resources such as energy, materials and water and the reduction of waste. It evaluates technologies, components and materials for zero energy new build and cost effective retrofit to deliver innovative high performance building envelope solutions. The module will address issues of health, comfort and well-being, balanced by concerns for energy, water and other natural resource consumption.

ISBN 0470163348 ISBN-13 9780470163344

"When nature inspires our architecture-not just how it looks but how buildings and communities actually function-we will have made great strides as a society. Biophilic Design provides us with tremendous insight into the 'why,' then builds us a road map for what is sure to be the next great design journey of our times." -Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chairman, U.S. Green Building Council "Having seen firsthand in my company the power of biomimicry to stimulate a wellspring of profitable innovation, I can say unequivocably that biophilic design is the real deal. Kellert, Heerwagen, and Mador have compiled the wisdom of world-renowned experts to produce this exquisite book; it is must reading for scientists, philosophers, engineers, architects and designers, and-most especially-businesspeople. Anyone looking for the key to a new type of prosperity that respects the earth should start here." -Ray C. Anderson, founder and Chair, Interface, Inc. The groundbreaking guide to the emerging practice of biophilic design This book offers a paradigm shift in how we design and build our buildings and our communities, one that recognizes that the positive experience of natural systems and processes in our buildings and constructed landscapes is critical to human health, performance, and well-being. Biophilic design is about humanity's place in nature and the natural world's place in human society, where mutuality, respect, and enriching relationships can and should exist at all levels and should emerge as the norm rather than the exception. Written for architects, landscape architects, planners, developers, environmental designers, as well as building owners, Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science, and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life is a guide to the theory, science, and practice of biophilic design. Twenty-three original and timely essays by world-renowned scientists, designers, and practitioners, including Edward O. Wilson, Howard Frumkin, David Orr, Grant Hildebrand, Stephen Kieran, Tim Beatley, Jonathan Rose, Janine Benyus, Roger Ulrich, Bert Gregory, Robert Berkebile, William Browning, and Vivian Loftness, among others, address: * The basic concepts of biophilia, its expression in the built environment, and how biophilic design connects to human biology, evolution, and development. * The science and benefits of biophilic design on human health, childhood development, healthcare, and more. * The practice of biophilic design-how to implement biophilic design strategies to create buildings that connect people with nature and provide comfortable and productive places for people, in which they can live, work, and study. Biophilic design at any scale-from buildings to cities-begins with a few simple questions: How does the built environment affect the natural environment? How will nature affect human experience and aspiration? Most of all, how can we achieve sustained and reciprocal benefits between the two? This prescient, groundbreaking book provides the answers.

ISBN 0727761102 ISBN-13 9780727761101

Conceptual Structural Design aims to bridge the gap between engineers and architects understanding of structural form and highlight the importance of close collaboration between all members of the design team throughout a project. This book is presented in two parts. The first part is theoretical and investigates sources of inspiration for developing structural form, learning from natural forms, applying our own intuition, seeking inspiration from precedents, applying understanding of structural principles, developing design through physical models, and using new design tools, construction methods and materials to develop new structural forms. The second part of the book is presented through a selection of case studies which include interviews with the design teams. Conceptual Structural Design: describes the immense development in design tools, construction methods and materials and how these have impacted upon the way designers think, perceive and design structures reflects on the development in knowledge, skills and opportunities which affect the design team and the importance of embracing sustainability agendas includes a selection of case studies which outline architects experiences from real projects and how they collaborated with engineers from the early stages of design. The second edition of Conceptual Structural Design is essential reading for architects and engineers, and for anyone interested in conceptual structural design."

A structural glass facade is a glass wall in which the glass itself is part of the building structure. The fundamental technology of structural faade systems has undergone a transition over the past decade from an emergent, experimental building form to a mature, fully robust technology. The book documents, defines, and categorizes the current state of the art in long-span glass faade design and construction, with a focus on structural systems, glass cladding options and implementation strategies for innovative design. With illustrations and case studies, the book discusses designs and design practices; engineering issues; material, process and fabrication considerations, installation means and methods, and project delivery strategies. A must for architects, industrial designers, and interior designers.

2019 Sustainable Design for the Built Environment
ISBN 1138066184 ISBN-13 9781138066182

Sustainable Design for the Built Environment marks the transition of sustainable design from a specialty service to the mainstream approach for creating a healthy and resilient built environment. This groundbreaking and transformative approach introduces sustainable design in a clear, concise, easy-to-read format. This book takes the reader deep into the foundations of sustainable design, and creates a holistic and integrative approach addressing the social, cultural, ecological, and aesthetic aspects in addition to the typical performance-driven goals. The first section of the book is themed around the origins, principles, and frameworks of sustainable design aimed at inspiring a deeper, broader, and more inclusive view of sustainability. The second section examines strategies such as biophilia and biomimicry, adaptation and resilience, health and well-being. The third section examines the application of sustainability principles from the global, urban, district, building, and human scale, illustrating how a systems thinking approach allows sustainable design to span the context of time, space, and varied perspectives. This textbook is intended to inspire a new vision for the future that unites human activity with natural processes to form a regenerative, coevolutionary model for sustainable design. By allowing the reader an insightful look into the history, motivations, and values of sustainable design, they begin to see sustainable design, not only as a way to deliver green buildings, but as a comprehensive and transformative meta-framework that is so needed in every sector of society. Supported by extensive online resources including videos and PowerPoints for each chapter, this book will be essential reading for students of sustainability and sustainable design.
