Description

The module develops an advanced understanding of the theories, principles and application of environmental design, building services, building materials and construction technology that inform and contribute to design and which underpin architectural production. This module will be closely related to design studio projects. The module will include contemporary structural methods, construction methodologies and building principles and will encourage the learner to explore in detail the role of industrialisation and prefabrication in the construction of larger complex buildings. The module will develop the learners understanding of the nature and behaviour of traditional buildings, the design choices made in their construction, their structural behaviour and the way traditional buildings relate to their environment. Students will develop an understanding of the principles and technologies related to the re-generation of our built heritage. The following topics will be further developed; site strategy, environmental issues, structural systems, envelope systems, services, fire safety, accessibility, material selection, interior fit-out and Technical Documentation and Specification.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Design and construct buildings that provide safe, comfortable, functional internal environments.

2.

Integrate and recognise a range of problems associated with construction systems and methods, materials and their properties.

3.

Demonstrate a knowledge of relevant research and appraisal methods.

4.

Produce design solutions which reconcile the relationship between design, technology, environment, built heritage and regulatory issues.

5.

Integrate technologies, environmental strategies, services and appropriate material choices into their design projects.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Technology is taught using a combination of lectures, presentations, theoretical discussion and practical based tutorials, workshops, projects, fieldwork and visits. Both individual and group work modes are utilised throughout.

Module Assessment Strategies

Student's must pass the Design Studio Technical Study. this assessment is performance‑orientated and formative modes are used during the process of project work to endeavour to provide constructive feedback. The emphasis in assessment is on: responding contextually; technical design integration; three‑dimensional problem solving skills; communication skills; technical analysis, acceptance of responsibility for learning, and the use of a broad range of learning resources.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will be dependent on failed components. This will be confirmed at formal exam boards.

Indicative Syllabus

The module comprises of four related themes:

Environment Design – Holistic design and the Conservation of Buildings, retro-fitting and refurbishment. The module will explore the application of technologies for the conservation of resources, and evaluate the technologies and materials suitable for zero energy new build, cost effective retro-fit for high energy performance building solutions.

Architects today incorporate principles of sustainable design as a matter of necessity. But the challenge of unifying climate control and building functionality, of securing a managed environment within a natural settingand combating the harsh forces of wind, water, and sunpresented a new set of obstacles to architects and engineers in the mid-twentieth century. First published in 1963, Design with Climate was one of the most pioneering books in the field and remains an important reference for practitioners, teachers, and students, over fifty years later. In this book, Victor Olgyay explores the impact of climate on shelter design, identifying four distinct climatic regions and explaining the effect of each on orientation, air movement, site, and materials. He derives principles from biology, engineering, meteorology, and physics, and demonstrates how an analytical approach to climate management can merge into a harmonious and aesthetically sound design concept. This updated edition contains four new essays that provide unique insights on issues of climate design, showing how Olgyay's concepts work in contemporary practice. Ken Yeang, John Reynolds, Victor W. Olgyay, and Donlyn Lyndon explore bioclimatic design, eco design, and rational regionalism, while paying homage to Olgyays impressive groundwork and contributions to the field of architecture.
