Description

The Structures Module introduces the learner to the theories, principles and application of building technology and structural design, systems of construction, tectonics, detailing and basic structural calculations of medium scale framed multi-storey buildings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate a specialised knowledge of scientific, engineering and technological disciplines.

2.

Describe the structural issues involved within the design of medium-scale buildings.

3.

Analyse the structural components of a medium-scale building and calculate the size of structural elements.

4.

Describe a range of options for construction, detailing and material selection of medium-scale buildings.

5.

Analyse building skeleton and skin locations and their relationship to materials.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Structures module is taught using a combination of lectures, presentations, theoretical discussion and practical based tutorials, workshops, projects, fieldwork and visits.  Both individual and group work modes are utilised throughout.

Module Assessment Strategies

Student's must pass the Structures Study. This assessment is performance‑orientated and formative modes are used during the process of project work to endeavour to provide constructive feedback. The emphasis in assessment is on: responding contextually; technical design integration; three‑dimensional problem solving skills; communication skills; technical analysis, acceptance of responsibility for learning, and the use of a broad range of learning resources

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will be dependent on failed components. This will be confirmed at formal exam boards.

Written for the practicing architect, Structural Design addresses the process on both a conceptual and a mathematical level. Most importantly, it helps architects work with structural consultants and understand all the necessary considerations when designing structural systems. Using a minimum of simple math, this book shows you how to make correct design calculations for structures made from steel, wood, concrete, and masonry. What?s more, this edition has been completely updated to reflect the latest design methods and codes, including LRFD for steel design. The book was also re-designed for easy navigation. Essential principles, as well as structural solutions, are visually reinforced with hundreds of drawings, photographs, and other illustrations--making this book truly architect-friendly.

A new edition of the best selling title in the prestigious Mitchell's Building Series. This book is the first of a two volume set which provides a complete and thorough treatment of the principles and techniques used in the design and construction of a building. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to bring it into line with recent changes in British Standards and developments in construction techniques while retaining the comprehensive approach for which it is renowned.

2015-12 Tony Hunt's Structures Notebook Routledge
ISBN 1138138096 ISBN-13 9781138138094

The purpose of the Structures Notebook is to explain, in the simplest possible terms, about the structure of 'things', and to demonstrate the fact that everything you see and touch, live in and use, living and man-made, has a structure which is acted upon by natural forces and reacts to these forces according to its form and material. The Structures Notebook was originally written by Tony Hunt as a brief teaching aid for students at the Royal College of Art who had very little, if any, knowledge of physics or structural behaviour. It has now been expanded, and with this second edition, updated, into a more comprehensive book while retaining a simple visual and non-mathematical approach to structures. The book is divided into seven main sections, in a logical sequence, and is written in simple language. Each section, related to its text, has a comprehensive set of hand-drawn sketches which show, as simply as possible, what the text is about. The book is almost totally non-mathematical since the author believes very strongly that structural behaviour can be understood best by diagrams and simple descriptions and that mathematics for the majority of people interested in design is a barrier. The design of structures is a combination of art and science and to achieve the best solution, concept should always come before calculation.
