ARCH07054 2021 The Archaeology of Northwest Ireland
This module is ideally suitable for participants who completed modules in 'Prehistoric Ireland, from Ice Age to Iron Age: 12,500BC - AD400' and 'The Archaeology and Architecture of Medieval Ireland 400-1550AD'. The module explores a series of detailed case studies of archaeological sites and archaeological landscapes situated in the northwest of Ireland that cover a time period from the Mesolithic through to the modern era. The focus will be on County Sligo, but also looks at sites in Counties Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon and Mayo. Each case study relates to an in-depth analysis of different periods from Irish archaeology (with many sites being multi-period), and covers a large range of archaeological monument types set in various landscape contexts. It also explores mythological, folkloric and historical aspects of the sites.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Demonstrate knowledge of the key time periods and events outlined in the module
Recognise principal monument types associated with different periods
Demonstrate an understanding of how landscape relates to a monument location
Place the archaeology of the north west region of Ireland into an Irish and European context
Express archaeological data and knowledge about archaeological sites in their contexts through written formats
Teaching and Learning Strategies

Powerpoint lectures will contain illustrations and supplementary text.
Class notes and reading will be available that cover key points of lectures
The course is divided in two main sections covering prehistoric sites and medieval sites located in the Northwest of Ireland, with some case studies covering both periods

Indicative Syllabus
Over the course of the module participants will explore a wide range of archaeological sites and archaeological landscapes as case studies covering the prehistoric and historical periods of Irish archaeology; from Mesolithic sites at Lough Gara, megalithic tombs, Bronze Age barrows and hillforts, and historic settlement sites, ecclesiastic buildings and fortifications to internationally Important archaeological complexes such as Ceide Fields, the Carrowmore, Knocknarea and Carrowkeel passage tombs as well as the Iron Age ‘Royal Site’ at Rathcroghan, the Gaelic inauguration site of the O'Dowd's at Aughris are among the archaeological sites that will be explored. The context of each site, its landscape and mythology/history will all be examined
