Description

The aim of this module is to provide practical experience of archaeological excavation skills, with an introduction to some aspects of the post-excavation process. The module runs online for a number of sessions throughout the semester and then for two weeks on-site at the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Have a knowledge of aspects of Irish archaeology and history

2.

Demonstrate awareness of and an ability to carry out key archaeological excavation and recording techniques.

3.

Understand and be able to explain how an archaeological excavation is conducted.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered as a blended module online and in person. Online will include lectures, discussions and online activities, which will be augmented by independent learning. The real-life emphasis will be on developing practical skills for excavation. The strategy will include excavation fieldwork and recording and hands-on processing of artefacts, ecofacts, and samples in the laboratory. This will follow on from the online learning. During the practical sessions relevant techniques as outlined in the indicative syllabus will be explained and demonstrated by staff and then undertaken by students. Students will be inducted in Health and Safety. This approach is expected to address student learning needs.

 

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% continuous assessment. Students will be assessed in a number of key areas including excavation techniques, recording, planning, photography and work ethic. Students maintain a logbook throughout the course, which is assessed at end of semester.

Indicative Syllabus

The particular site and/or nature of the archaeology will vary from year to year, however the following activities and techniques are likely to be included:

 

Have a knowledge of aspects of Irish archaeology and history

  • participate in public archaeology dissemination of excavation results. 

Demonstrate awareness of and an ability to carry out key archaeological excavation and recording techniques.

  • record features through drawing plans, sections, written descriptions and photography
  • process ecofacts and artefacts on-site and in the laboratory
  • provide first aid care for finds where necessary

Understand and be able to explain how an archaeological excavation is conducted.

  • lay out excavation trenches;
  • desod and excavate using the single-context system
  • Understand the key aspects of health and safety on site and in the laboratory
