Description

The primary objective of the work placement is to provide the student with broader skills and knowledge of the working environment. Furthermore, it will allow the student an opportunity to apply theoretical and practical knowledge gained during their programme of study to a work setting. It is a compulsory element in semester 6 and student go on work placement for a minimum period of 8 weeks. The student will not be eligible for an award until the placement has been successfully completed. The placement is supervised by tutors visiting the student at their place of work. The student must keep a weekly reflective diary of the work undertaken. A report from the company's student supervisor, based on the performance is forwarded to the appropriate department in the Institute on completion of the placement.

 

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Demonstrate an ability to prepare an application and secure work placement. 

2.

Apply the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired on their degree programme to a work environment.

3.

Demonstrate transferable skills including communication, interpersonal, customer care and problem solving in a work based setting.

4.

Display the ability to work in a team environment by working cooperatively with others in an organisation.

5.

Display the ability to complete work based tasks in a timely manner.

6.

Complete a work placement diary reflecting on and analysing work activities.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

A combination of workshops, lectures and one-to-one mentoring.

Module Assessment Strategies

  1. Students will be assessed on the basis of visits by tutors, a diary of work kept by the student and a report submitted by a senior member from the organisation in which the student is placed.
  2. The placement/project is assessed only on a pass/fail basis. 
  3. To be awarded the Ordinary Degree in Business in Business Administration the student must pass the placement in addition to the taught modules, but no marks will be awarded and it will not be counted towards the level of the award.
  4. In the event that a student cannot secure a work placement or is deemed unable to complete a work placement, an alternative to the placement is the completion of a large project based on an anlysis of an organisation.

Indicative Syllabus

1     Work Placement Preparation:

  • Create letter of application;
  • Design a curriculum vitae;
  • Examine the application process;
  • Research into securing suitable placement;
  • Discuss placement experience of past students;
  • Conduct mock interviews;
  • Produce and submit an initial report of work placement details;
  • Outline module assessment procedures.

2   Work Placement Performance:

  • Attendance and punctuality should be strictly adhered to throughout the placement;
  • Appropriate dress code should be adhered to throughout the placement;
  • The student will be expected to perform assigned duties in an acceptable manner for their employer;
  • The student should show an aptitude and an interest in the work assigned by employer;
  • Complete all tasks assigned accurately and to a high standard;
  • Produce work within the time constraints allowed;
  • Adhere to the employer's acceptable usage and other policies and procedures;
  • Exercise discretion and confidentiality in all aspects of company procedures;
  • Communicate with peers, supervisors and customers in an acceptable manner;
  • Use all equipment in an acceptable and careful manner;
  • Observe Health and Safety regulations;
  • The student will keep a weekly diary of work activities undertaken.
