Description

This module advances the skills acquired in the module Introduction to Computer and Text Processing 1.  The module allows the learner to develop their skills with an emphasis on the operations of a computer, presentations, keyboarding and word processing facilities reflective of those required to work in an administration role in today’s business environment.  

The focus of this module is on using technology to manipulate, create, store and retrieve information to express ideas and communicate effectively in business.  It introduces the learner to presentation software to assist the learner in developing professional business presentations. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate ability to search, retrieve, edit, reproduce, save, transfer and publish information effectively.

2.

Create and edit varied basic business documents reflective of current business administration practice.

3.

Demonstrate ability to create, format and present business information professionally using presentation software.

4.

Demonstrate ability to enter meaningful text at a speed of 30 wpm for 10 minutes with 97% accuracy.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Practical, demonstration of all areas will be given by lecturer with practice facilitate through completion of examples reflective of current business practice.

The learner will be given any extra supports required and recommendations of tools/techniques that will support each individual learning style.

Module Assessment Strategies

In-class continuous assessment to assess Presentation Software, Business Document Formatting/editing and Keyboarding Skills on Computer at intervals throughout the Semester.

The student will be given a presentation specification and will prepare a business presentation using good design guidelines and will set up the show with animations.

In-class practical exam to assess word processing and keyboarding skills - this will include a speed test.

The learner will be given practical work weekly that they will output/upload and will be presented in a portfolio of work complete at the end of the Semester.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Practical Assessment/Exam in line with the Assessment Strategy.

Indicative Syllabus

Operations of Computer Systems and File Management:

  • Managing Files, Online Storage, Managing Downloads/Uploads, Effective use of Internet and Email for communication.

Presentation Software:

  • Introduction to presentation software,
  • Format a presentation to include formatting of slide master, setting font type, size, spacing,
  • Use of design templates,
  • Applying animation to presentation including image, video, sounds,
  • Applying shapes, SmartArt and charts,
  • Setup show with transitions.

Word Processing functions and document development:

  • Develop ability to effectively use the format text, paragraph and page layout functions,
  • Use margin setting to suit a variety of business documents,
  • Develop ability to use page setup suitable for business tasks,
  • Insert clipart, pictures and edit in line with text,
  • Introduction to creating lists using bullets, numbering and outline numbering,
  • Introduction to tabs and tables function.

Creation/formatting of Business Documents:

  • Understand and develop good business document formatting,
  • Demonstrate ability to use correct and appropriate document format to include correct use of spacing, punctuation, spelling and suitable layouts for various documents,
  • Create and edit various basic business documents to develop use of word processing software to include Display (with different heading styles), Business Letters, Reports, Meeting Documents including Agenda, Chairman Minutes, Minutes, Itineraries, Advertisements with a variety of styles to include menus etc.,
  • Proofread, spell and grammar check documents and output via saving to folder, other formats, email and print.

Keyboarding Skills:

  • Continued development of touch-typing techniques and keyboarding skills,
  • Locate and operate advanced keys to include numerical keypad for data entry efficiency,
  • Use the keyboard with confidence to type text accurately and develop speed and accuracy skills to acquire a minimum speed of 30 wpm with a maximum error level of 3%.
