Description

This module builds on the skills acquired in the modules Introduction to Computer and Text Processing 1 & 2 to develop the learners competency in a range of Text Processing skills to prepare, process and produce business documents accurately and efficiently within specified time limits.  The learner will continue to develop effective data and text inputting skills.  The module prepares the learner for opportunities in business administration roles by working on documents reflective of current practice. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Create documents and apply the correct formatting and alignment using images, indentation, bullets, numbering to a business standard.

2.

Demonstrate ability to align text using tabs and tables.

3.

Demonstrate ability to use a wide range of word processing functions to create and format business documents.

4.

Demonstrate ability to enter meaningful text at a speed of 35wpm for 10 minutes with 97% accuracy.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will be given original examples and shown how to format documents.  The lecturer will demonstrate how to correctly format documents and will give the student a variety of examples that will be assessed to ensure the correct methods are used.

Module Assessment Strategies

In-class continuous assessment, students will work on sample documents and will output to create a portfolio of work throughout the Semester.  In addition the student will complete in-class practical assessments scheduled in advance at intervals throughout the Semester.  Final speed and accuracy test will be held in-class at the end of the module.

Indicative Syllabus

Intermediate Word Processing Functions:

  • Use advanced layout functions;
  • Utilise the Style function by modifying and creating styles;
  • Headers, footers, page numbers;
  • Setting out documents correctly with breaks and numbering sections of documents;
  • Using a variety of font functions to style documents such as spaced characters, text shading, superscripts/subscript
  • Insert and aligning clipart, images, icons, graphics, shapes, wordart in documents;
  • Utilise lists such as bullets and numbering effectively in documents;
  • Footnotes and endnotes.

 Using Columns, Tabs and Tables to align text/numbers:

  • Introduction to aligning text in columns, how to use multiple column formats;
  • Using tabs (left, right, centre, decimal) within documents to align text;
  • Using leader dot tabs to create tear-off sections in business letters and other documents;
  • Creating basic tables for use in business documents.

Creation/formatting of Business Documents:

  • Continue to develop correct and appropriate document format to include correct use of spacing, punctuation, spelling and suitable layouts for various documents;
  • Create and edit various intermediate level business documents to develop use of word processing software to include Display work (with different heading styles), Letters with different formatting and enclosures such as tear-off and multiple pages, Reports (long), long business documents, documents with columns, tabs and tables;
  • Proofread, spell and grammar check documents and output via saving to folder, email and print.

Keyboarding Skills:

Develop speed and accuracy skills to acquire a minimum of 35wpm with a maximum error level of 3%.
