Description

Building on the knowledge and learning from earlier years and semester 1 of final year, enhancing students understanding and ability to apply management accounting concepts and techniques. Independent learning and critical evaluation of current practice is encouraged.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Discuss current issues and developments in management accounting.

Develop detailed master budgets and discuss different approaches to the budgetary process.

Prepare detailed variance analysis reports
4.
Identify, calculate and appraise appropriate measures of performance for selected organisations
5.
Critically evaluate management accounting practices in the context of the modern business environment

Module Assessment Strategies

Formative assessment occurs throughout the semester to scaffold towards the final closed book exam.

 

Exam should be a closed book exam and supervised in person or proctored if online.

Indicative Syllabus

LO No 1:Discuss current issues and developments in management accounting.

Automation, digitalisation, disruptive technology, big data, sustainability.

LO No 2: Develop detailed master budgets and discuss different approaches to the budgetary process.

Advanced master budgets. Beyond budgeting/the debate. Zero based versus incremental budgeting, participation and behavioural issues

LO No 3: Prepare detailed variance analysis reports

Variance analysis (e.g. material, labour, variable and fixed overhead, sales and idle time variances)

Calculate variances and prepare reconciliation statement or given variance results, produce standard cost card. Variance investigation, exception reporting and reasons for variances.

Planning and operational Variances

Cost control versus cost reduction. Relevance in the modern business environment

LO No 4:  Identify, calculate and appraise appropriate measures of performance for selected organisations

 Divisionalisation, financial and non-financial measures, behavioural aspects, balanced scorecard, sustainability measures, benchmarking, integrated reporting.

LO No 5:  Critically evaluate management accounting practices in the context of the modern business environment 

Conflict between corrective action in variance analysis and TQM ideals 

The relevance of standard costing in the modern business environment and how to adapt and improve reports.

Beyond Budgeting: The Debate

Zero based versus incremental budgets, Imposed versus participative budgets.
