Description

The student will develop a knowledge and understanding of the financial management methods for analysing the financial position of a business, accessing appropriate sources of finance and appraising capital investment opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe the role of the financial manager in an organisation in meeting the needs of all stakeholders.

2.

Calculate accounting ratios and prepare a report analysing the financial position and performance of an organisation.

3.

Identify and apply a range of investment appraisal techniques and interpret the results.

4.

Discuss the importance of, and prepare calculations in relation to working capital management.

5.

Identify and appraise the principle sources of finance available to a business.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and practical tutorials.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will be assessed through a combination of appropriate assessment(s) and exam. Assessments will contain theoretical and numerical parts.

This module will be delivered by a number of lecturers. Assessment will be carried out individually by each lecturer. The final exam will be common.

Repeat assessments will be developed in accordance with the requirements of the module

Indicative Syllabus

L01- Describe the role of the financial manager in an organisation in meeting the needs of all stakeholders.

  • Nature and purpose of accounting.
  • Users of financial reports.
  • Stakeholder needs.
  • Digital technologies

L02- Calculate accounting ratios and prepare a report analysing the financial position and performance of an organisation.

  • Financial ratios including profitability, liquidity and efficiency
  • Create report analysing financial position
  • Limitations of ratio analysis

L03- Identify and apply a range of investment appraisal techniques and interpret the results.

  • Perform calculations for principle appraisal methods (e.g. Payback Period, ARR, NPV, IRR)
  • Advantages/disadvantages 
  • Recommendations where there are competing projects
  • Sustainable projects
  • Post audit review

L04- Discuss the importance of, and prepare calculations in relation to working capital management.

  • Define working capital
  • Manage individual elements of Current Assets and Current Liabilities
  • Calculate operating cash cycle and advise on appropriate levels
  • Indicate how to improve operating cash cycle

L05- Identify and appraise the principle sources of finance available to a business.

  • Distinguish between short, medium and long-term finance
  • Internal and external sources of finance
  • Sustainable finance
  • Debt v equity
