Description

The aim of the module is to introduce the student to the essential components of accounting and payroll functions in an organisation. Students participate in projects that allow practical application through processing transactions, experiencing integration of data and creation of reports using accounting and payroll software.    

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Process transactions using accounting software.

Produce periodic reports using accounting software.

Prepare manual payroll calculations and process transactions using payroll software.

Produce periodic reports using payroll software.

Discuss how integrated accounting software can add value to a business.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The student will engage with the content of the module through pre-lecture reading, informative video presentations, lectures in computer labs and quizzes.

The student will develop an understanding of module content through the practical use of prescribed software applications to complete examples and the identification of emerging technologies that could improve tasks.

The student will apply their learning through the use of software applications to complete practical examples and exercises.

Indicative Syllabus

LO1 - Process transactions using accounting software:

  • Set up accounting software,
  • Process sales and purchases transactions,
  • Process bank and cash transactions.

LO2 - Produce periodic reports using accounting software:

  • Perform period end routine tasks,
  • Produce routine reports that meet business requirements,

LO3 - Prepare manual payroll calculations and process transactions using payroll software:

  • Create employee records,
  • Prepare payroll calculations,
  • Create payments and deductions,
  • Calculate PAYE, PRSI and USC.

LO4 - Produce periodic reports using payroll software

  • Perform period end routine tasks,
  • Create payslips for employees,
  • Prepare submission of payroll information for Revenue,
  • Produce routine reports that meet business requirements.

LO5 - Discuss how integrated accounting software can add value to a business

  • Identify the parts of an information system,
  • Explain the functional view of an organisation,
  • Describe the management levels and the informational needs for each level in an organisation,
  • Discuss how information flows within an organisation,
  • Describe computer-based information systems,
  • Distinguish between transaction processing systems, management information systems, decision support systems, and executive support systems,
  • Compare office automation systems and knowledge work systems,
  • Identify the functions, management levels and systems that may use the reports produced by the accounting and payroll software,
  • Discuss how these reports may influence management decisions.
